Milton Keynes becomes latest to consult on late night levy after police request

Milton Keynes Council has become the latest local authority to consult on whether to impose a Late Night Levy.

The Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011 allows councils to charge a levy to raise a contribution towards the costs of policing the night-time economy.

Thames Valley Police has asked the council to impose the levy to help meet its costs.

A consultation paper issued by the council said the levy would be additional to its licensing fee and be used to fund police activity near to pubs and clubs.

It would apply to premises still open between 1am and 6am.

Exceptions would be premises that receive small business rate relief and premises that have joined the local Safer Socialising Scheme, which is designed to reduce alcohol related crime and disorder.

Leeds City Council is also actively considering whether to impose a similar levy.
