Equal pay law firm Stefan Cross Solicitors to close: report

A law firm that specialised in high-profile equal pay claims against local authorities is to close, it has been reported.

The Journal said Newcastle-based Stefan Cross Solicitors had been placed in voluntary liquidation and would be wound down by September, with the loss of 15 jobs.

The firm’s founder, Stefan Cross QC, told the paper that the law firm’s work had reached its “natural conclusion”.

Existing claims against Sunderland City Council will continue, while Cross will also work on a number of cases against councils in Scotland.

He told The Journal: “We’ve split the business between England and Scotland for several years and the English cases have pretty much reached the end of their natural life, but I’m still involved in thousands of cases in Scotland through separate legal firms.”

Cross added: “I’m glad we’ve achieved what we’ve achieved – there have been over 250,000 equal pay settlements as a result of what we’ve done, with £2bn already being paid back as a consequence, and that would not have happened without the work we have done.”
