Liverpool City Council wins 'Legal Services of the Year' at 2016 MJ Awards

Liverpool City Council has been named ‘Legal Services of the Year’ at the MJ Awards 2016, while Durham Council won the ‘Excellence in Governance and Scrutiny’ category.

The citation for Liverpool read: “The judges were impressed with the sheer ambition and scale of the work carried out by this team with resources clearly aligned to political pledges and tangible benefits delivered for the citizens of the city. The winner demonstrated an ability to deliver innovative solutions to seemingly intractable problems.”

The other finalists in the 'Legal Services' category were: Tower Hamlets; Waltham Forest; Newark and Sherwood; Peterborough; and Wolverhampton.

Leeds City Council was named ‘Local Authority of the Year’, the top award. Other winners were:

  • Commercialism in the Property Estate: Leeds City Council/Sevenoaks DC
  • Innovation in Partnership: Sunderland City Council
  • Reinventing Public Services: Ealing LBC
  • Senior Leadership Team: Southend-on-Sea Council
  • Trading Standards and Environmental Health: Camarthenshire CC/North West

Michael Burton, editorial director of The MJ awards, said: “We launched our awards 13 years to showcase the huge talent and innovation that exists, often below the radar, among local authority teams. This year shows that despite a difficult budgetary environment this talent is undiminished.”

Heather Jameson, editor of The MJ, said: “Judging by the calibre of the entries we had, innovation is alive and well in local government. What is especially impressive is the dedication of local authority teams to the services they provide and to the users, many of them disadvantaged.”
