Council calls in police amid concerns community buses survey was rigged

Cambridgeshire County Council has called in police over concerns that a survey on community buses was rigged to persuade it to keep spending on subsidies.

The council has offered concessionary fares on community transport dial-a-ride services as well as conventional buses, but said it had no statutory obligation to support the former and had consulted on ending this.

It retained the subsidy after a consultation showed the services were well used. But the council now thinks some 200 of the 1,800 responses were duplicated.

A county spokesman said: “The council has referred the issue to the police and will fully co-operate and work with the constabulary as part of any possible investigation.

“As such it would be inappropriate for the authority to comment further at this point.”
