Campaigners bid to raise £25k in pursuit of incinerator judicial review

Campaigners are seeking to raise £25,000 to mount a judicial review challenge over plans for an incinerator in Yorkshire.

The Aire Valley Against Incineration (AVAI) group said they are “fundamentally opposed to the introduction of an incinerator into the heart of our Aire Valley”.

Last week (23 May) AVAI applied for a judicial review against Bradford Council's decision to approve the planning application for the Marley incinerator.

On the group’s JustGiving page, Charlotte Miller of AVAI said: “We have been given expert legal advice that we have a very strong case and if successful, this will overturn the planning application.

“The judicial review process is very expensive and it is only with the generous help of the public that we have been able to do this.”

Miller said the group’s reasons to fight included:

  • The council had decided to approve the plans for a huge incinerator that would be burning industrial and commercial waste from the Bradford District
  • AVAI wanted to save schools, nurseries, recreational grounds and care homes from the harmful emissions this plant would emit
  • It wanted to safeguard the health of its communities now and for future generations
  • It wanted to encourage our local government to look at other options of waste management that have a lesser impact on the environment

She said AVAI need to raise the additional £25,000 within the next week. So far £2,020 has been raised from 116 supporters.
