First neighbourhood plan referendum in the country secures 'yes' vote

The country’s first neighbourhood plan referendum – held in Upper Eden, Cumbria – saw strong backing for adoption of the proposals.

The referendum related to the Upper Eden Neighbourhood Plan, which covered Brough Parish and 16 surrounding parishes in East Cumbria.

On a 33.67% turnout, there were 1,310 votes in favour and 138 against.

The plan will now be put forward for formal inclusion in Eden District Council’s development plan at a meeting next month (11 April).

Cllr Gordon Nicolson, Eden DC’s Leader, said: “I offer my congratulations to the Upper Eden Planning Group on a successful result. I am delighted that the residents of Upper Eden have decided by a significant majority to endorse the Upper Eden Community Plan.

“This is the first plan in the country. I do hope that local people will now submit planning applications and we look forward to dealing with them. That is how the communities will benefit as the housing they want will be built in places they want to live.”
