Job Description:

£36,656 - £43,628 per annum

Do you fancy an interesting and rewarding role in a progressive authority – if you do then we’d like to talk to you about our Regulatory & Litigation Lawyer role.

Cornwall Council is a large and ambitious Council, supported by an experienced and welcoming Legal Service.  We pride ourselves in bringing a proportionate and pragmatic approach to advising our clients.

We are seeking a full-time, permanent specialist Regulatory / Prosecution Lawyer, ideally qualified as a Solicitor, Barrister or FCILEx, to join our Regulatory & Litigation Team.

You’ll be joining a busy team with a varied stream of mainly prosecution work, and you’ll have a broad knowledge and proven experience of dealing with prosecutions.

Experience of regulatory work is desirable, as is an understanding of the local government regulatory framework.  However, we’ll support your development in relation to areas you're not familiar with.

Excellent oral and written communication skills, including Court advocacy, and the ability to work under pressure and to strict timescales are a must. You must also be proficient at drafting and a pragmatic problem solver.

The work of the team is varied and challenging and includes:

  • Trading Standards, food safety, health and safety and animal welfare prosecutions and advice.
  • Building Control.
  • Planning enforcement and prosecutions.
  • General Licensing advice, including to elected Members.
  • Statutory nuisances, prosecutions for dog fouling and prosecutions for littering.
  • Education Prosecutions, education supervision orders and related matters.

If you have the motivation, resilience and experience for this role, we’d love to hear from you.

There are many benefits of working for Cornwall Council, including a defined benefit pension scheme, competitive salary, family friendly policies and flexible working. This role can be carried out largely remotely, but some office-based and Court-based working will be required to support business needs.

For an informal conversation or to obtain more details about the role, please contact Becca on 01872 324127.

Fairness and inclusion are at the heart of our vision for Cornwall.  In order to best serve our communities, we are striving to achieve a diverse workforce that is inclusive of all backgrounds, cultures and identities, e.g. race, disability, sex, gender, age, religion and sexual orientation. We are an equal opportunities and Disability Confident employer, and we will assess all applicants on their merits.

Cornwall Council is committed to safeguarding and following safer recruitment principles to help make sure our staff and volunteers are suitable to work with children, young people and adults at risk. It is a vital part of creating a safe and positive environment and making a commitment to keeping all service users safe from harm. We are also open to discussion about flexible working.

Whilst the location/work-base for this role has been specified, our evolving ways of working means that the role may require you to also work remotely (e.g. from home/other locations). We will discuss this with you during the recruitment process.

More information about working for Cornwall Council is available on our website.

We are also open to discussion about flexible working.

What you’ll get in return:

Cornwall Council’s ambition is to be an employer of choice, a high performing Council and a learning organisation. We commit to providing a reward and benefits package to attract, motivate and reward our employees. We offer a range of flexible working options to our staff. This helps provide our employees with a greater work/life balance. Whilst still ensuring that service needs are met.
