Watchdog consults on changes to rules on licensed gambling operators

The Gambling Commission has launched consultations on proposed changes to the rules governing licensed gambling operators.

Most of the changes affect those offering gambling facilities via websites or phones. However, some will affect premises-based gambling operators.

The watchdog said key proposed changes included:

more clarity on the Commission’s expectations that operators would work with it in an open and cooperative manner;
enhanced and consolidated information requirements for operators sharing information with the Commission;
enhanced dispute resolution procedures;
controls on poker and other networks;
clarification regarding sufficient betting facilities at premises offering remote gambling facilities;
better protection of customer funds including the introduction of a simple rating system to inform consumers of the protection they receive.

The Commission said final decisions on the changes would be announced early in 2014, with implementation expected next Spring.

A Gambling Commission spokesperson said: “These proposed changes are intended to enhance consumer protection and improve gambling regulation.

“We want to collect people’s views on the proposals during the public consultation which will run until early December.”
