Former Liverpool mayor loses bid for judicial review over arrest

Liverpool’s former Labour elected mayor Joe Anderson has lost a bid to judicially review Merseyside Police over his arrest last December.

Mr Anderson and his son David brought judicial review claims challenging their arrests and the searches of their premises in December 2020 carried out as part of a police investigation into corruption allegations concerning the council. Mr Anderson served as elected mayor from 2012-21.

Serjeant’s Inn Chambers said its members John de Bono QC and James Berry were instructed by the Chief Constable of Merseyside to defend the claims.

Both claimants were earlier refused permission for judicial review by Julian Knowles J, and on 29 July their cases came before Dove J for renewed permission hearings, but he has also refused permission in both cases.

Mr Berry said the judgment was delivered ex tempore by Dove J but none of the grounds were found to be arguable.

Merseyside Police did not respond to a request for comment.
