NW council to procure £607k in legal advice on litigated civil claims

Bolton Council is to procure the provision of legal services worth an estimated £607,000 for the defence of litigated civil claims.

Bolton said it currently insures its liability risks with QBE via Risk Management Partners and claims arising from this contract are handled by Gallagher Bassett (GB), Leeds. Motor fleet risks are currently insured via Aviva and claims arising from this contract are handled by their in house claims teams.

“From time to time the claims which arise will become litigated and the services of solicitors are required to manage and provide representation in connection with the litigation. It is this legal work which is the subject of this tender,” the council said.

It added: “In connection with this tender the Authority is prepared to receive submissions for the provision of legal services, which will mainly include the defence of civil litigation and may also extend to include representation at inquests, tribunals, judicial reviews and varied legal advice.

“Litigation can arise from third parties and employees in relation to insurance claims and the litigation work involved will primarily involve civil claims brought against the Authority for alleged: negligence (common law); breach of statutory duty; and vehicle accidents.”

The closing date is 5 June 2017. The contract is to start on 1 August 2017 and end on 31 July 2019, with the option to extend for a further two 12-month periods.
