Thames Water sets out £48m replacement arrangements for managed legal service

Thames Water is to set up a £40m replacement for its managed legal services arrangement as well as procure an £8m panel for “high-visibility, substantial and complex work”.

The utilities business’ managed legal service is currently delivered by Berwin Leighton Paisner. It is a fixed fee solution for the majority of Thames Water’s legal services requirements.

Under the replacement arrangements the managed legal service will form lot 1 and include the retention of the on-site team at the company’s Reading base.

Thames Water said it envisaged that the contract for lot 1 would be awarded for five years with options to extend for up to three years. The maximum duration is therefore eight years.

The legal services panel will form lot 2 and include:

  • Formal regulatory investigations
  • Class actions
  • Appeals from the High Court
  • Disposals, Mergers and Acquisitions
  • Other business activities;
  • Major Projects

The procurement expressly excludes legal services in relation to price review, Thames Tideway Tunnel and finance related legal services for the benefit of the company’s treasury function.

The panel arrangements could also last for up to eight years.
