Major East Midlands development corporation awards £300k legal services contract

A development company set up by five East Midlands local authorities has appointed Womble Bond Dickinson to a legal services contract worth an estimated £300,000.

EM DevCo was set up as an interim vehicle in 2021 by Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire County Councils, North West Leicestershire District Council and Broxtowe and Rushcliffe borough councils to accelerate the development and planning of several major infrastructure projects in the region.

The company is involved in HS2 works in Toton and Chilwell, Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station and the East Midlands Airport.

As an interim vehicle, EM DevCo is anticipated to exist in its current state until any successor statutory development corporation is brought into effect. The contract award notice states that this is anticipated to take place around 2024.

The contract adds: "As EM DevCo enters its second year with the benefit of additional resources from the UK Government, the company needs to appoint a legal team for the duration of the interim vehicle prior to the establishment of the statutory development corporation ("EMDC") to support in four key areas."

The contract is scheduled to end in July 2024.

Announcing the initiative's launch in May 2021, Nottinghamshire County Council said EM DevCo would create 84,000 new jobs, 10,000 new homes and add billions in value to the East Midlands economy.
