Uncontested employer or public liability claims up to £25k to use Claims Portal

Uncontested claims for compensation of up to £25,000 for employer liability or public liability can be handled using the out-of-court Claims Portal from this week.

The Ministry of Justice said the change would make no difference to the amount of compensation that victims receive for genuine claims, but would reduce the legal fees payable by defendants – such as schools, businesses and councils – or their insurers.

The Government said the move was part of a package of measures to tackle the so-called ‘compensation culture’ and high insurance premiums. Other changes include the Jackson reforms and the ban on referral fees in personal injury claims.

Justice Minister Helen Grant said: “We are turning the tide on the compensation culture which has pushed up the cost of insurance for drivers, schools and business – and taking another important step to reducing the cost of living for ordinary people.”
