Local Government Reorganisation 2026
Minister quits MHCLG role amid Labour turmoil
- Details
The Minister for Devolution, Faith and Communities at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has resigned as part of a protest against Keir Starmer's leadership of the Labour Party.
In a statement posted online, Miatta Fahnbulleh said she was proud of the work she carried out at MHCLG, which included rolling out the department’s Pride in Place Programme and “tackling the rising tide of hate and division in our communities”.
However, she added: “Whilst progress has been made, we have not acted with the vision, pace and ambition that our mandate for change demands of us.”
The MP for Peckham claimed that “mistakes” such as the winter fuel payment and cuts to support for disabled people had led to her constituents “doubting” the party’s mission, adding that Starmer had “lost the trust and confidence of the public”.
Fahnbulleh – who took on the ministerial role in September 2025 – urged the Prime Minister to set out a timetable for his departure.
Her resignation comes amid growing criticism of Starmer’s leadership from Labour members.
Two other ministers have also stepped down from their positions in protest at Starmer’s leadership: Jess Phillips and Alex Davies-Jones.
Phillips previously served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Safeguarding and Violence Against Women and Girls at the Home Office, while Davies-Jones was a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Ministry of Justice.
