Council meeting disrupted as climate protestors glue hands to chamber desks

Police were called to a Dorset Council Meeting after two climate protestors glued themselves to a council chamber desk.

The protest came as the council was debating a motion that the local authority should urge the Government to pursue UK energy self-sufficiency as soon as possible.

Two hours into the Full Council meeting on Thursday (14 April 2022), Cllr Louie O'Leary stood to second his support for the motion. However, protestors cut Cllr O'Leary's speech shortly after he voiced support for nuclear power as a means to achieve energy self-sufficiency for national security purposes. 

The council meeting ended immediately following the disruption.

Dorset Police said officers attended, and the two women were subsequently able to free themselves from the desk.

The police force confirmed that the women's details were taken, and enquiries into the incident are ongoing. But no arrests have been made.

According to a BBC report, the protestors support renewable power and a more insulation-focussed policy.
