Gove rebukes multiple social landlords for failing tenants after maladministration verdicts

The Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, Michael Gove, has written letters to 10 major social housing landlords including three councils as part of his latest drive to “name and shame” those that are said to be guilty of letting down tenants.

The letters from the Housing Secretary follow findings of severe maladministration against each of the landlords by the independent Housing Ombudsman Service, where they have failed to deal with serious tenant issues in a proper and timely manner.

The 10 landlords to receive letters last week are:

  • Abri Housing Association
  • Manchester City Council
  • GreensquareAccord
  • Hyde Housing
  • 3CHA
  • Stevenage Borough Council
  • Sanctuary
  • Onward Home
  • Newham Council
  • Metropolitan Thames Valley Homes

This follows Gove's recent letter expressing “incredible disappointment” to Islington Council after the landlord received the same finding.

Publication of the letters was part of a commitment made by Gove last year to focus on poor practice by social housing landlords with the hope of improving the quality of services for tenants.

The Secretary of State has also previously said he would prevent landlords that fall short of meeting new consumer standards from receiving grant funding for development.
