Institute of Licensing hands Kolvin double honour

Philip Kolvin QC of 2-3 Gray’s Inn Square has received a double honour from the Institute of Licensing, having been appointed to the specially created position of Patron and awarded Companionship.

The Institute said the move was in recognition of Kolvin’s “un-matched contributions to both the field of licensing and to the Institute of Licensing”.

Kolvin was chairman of the Institute for seven years, during which it was changed from a predominantly local authority organisation to one covering both the private and public sectors. He also oversaw the Institute’s merger with the Society of Licensing Practitioners.

James Button, President of the Institute of Licensing, said: “Philip’s vision, leadership and commitment have enabled the Institute to grow in a way, and at a speed, that the founding members could only dream of. That, allied to his professional knowledge, and willingness to share that, has enabled the Institute to provide benefits to its members which are unequalled in the field.”

Kolvin, a contributor to Local Government Lawyer and a course presenter on Local Government Law TV, said:
“The Institute performs a crucial function in setting standards for the profession and in providing a forum for education and the dissemination of ideas. I feel honoured and privileged to be asked to serve as its first patron and look forward to using the role, under the direction of the Board, to promote the standing of the organisation and its members.”
