Judicial review on burial site for Richard III kicks off in High Court
- Details
The Divisional Court will this week hear the judicial review over the proposed burial of Richard III in Leicester Cathedral.
The claimant, a member of the Plantagenet Alliance, is seeking to challenge:
- The licence granted by the Secretary of State to the University of Leicester to reinter the remains in the Cathedral; and
- The university and/or Leicester City Council’s failure to conduct a consultation prior to the decision to reinter the remains in Leicester Cathedral and an alleged failure to take into account whether Richard III himself had expressed views on where he should be buried.
The case will be heard today and tomorrow by Lady Justice Hallett, Mr Justice Ouseley and Mr Justice Haddon-Cave.
Andrew Sharland of 11KBW is appearing for the city council, while Anya Proops and Heather Emmerson from the same set are acting for the university.
