Helen Pitcher, chairman of the selection panel, said: “I am delighted at the announcement of the new silks. I congratulate each one of them. The selection process is a rigorous and demanding one.”

However, she said the panel remained concerned that the number of female applicants for QC status remained “stubbornly low”. Of those women who did apply, 58% were successful.

Five solicitor advocates of the nine who applied were successful. They all work for large City or US law firms in international arbitration.

There were 223 applications in total.
