Local government solicitors need to check by 11 November that they are eligible to vote on the proposed changes to the Law Society Council, writes Maria Memoli.
The Law Society will be sending ballots to all Law Society members for a vote on proposals to restrict membership of Council to a 12-year term and to reform Council constituencies. The ballot was requested following the recent AGM at which the proposals were considered. You'll need to check your contact details to make sure you can vote.
Important – check eligibility
To make sure you receive the ballot and are able to vote, check you've provided an up-to-date email address and are not opted out of Law Society membership (non-marketing) communications. You must update your contact details by 11 November.
You can check your email address by:
- checking your verified My Law Society (My LS) account, or
- contacting our Support Centre on 020 7242 1222
You can also confirm that your preferences for receiving membership (non-marketing) emails from the Law Society are up to date via the Support Centre.
Most members are already set up to vote, but it’s important to check your details, so that you do not lose your opportunity to have your say.
These proposals are important as they will:
- reduce the number of geographical seats(including reducing local government seats from two to one)
- increasing seats for others groups
- introduce a 12-year term limit for Council members – an important issue for the profession

If you want LLG to retain the two seats on Law Society Council, be sure to vote AGAINST the resolution 3 passed at the AGM (Proposal : The Change in the composition of Council that includes reduction in LLG seats to one instead of two)
The other resolution 4 limits Council Members to a 12 year term.
This is your opportunity to exercise your right to vote on both matters. Please make sure you are elibigile to vote.
