Invicta Law eyes digital future with Peppermint Technology deal

“In future, we will no longer have a legal business that happens to use technology; instead, it will be a digital business that happens to do law,” the chief executive of Invicta Law, the legal services trading arm of Kent County Council (KCC), has predicted.

Geoff Wild’s comments came after Invicta Law chose Peppermint Technology to provide its technology platform.

KCC has been working towards the launch of a wholly-owned alternative business structure in April this year.

The aim is to grow turnover from Kent Legal Services' £10.8m to £11.3m in Year 1, £17.8m in Year 5 and £29.8m in Year 10.

Invicta Law, which has more than 150 specialist personnel, is to be organised along four work-streams: corporate and commercial, litigation, employment and education, and social care.

Wild, who was Director of Governance and Law at the county council before becoming Invicta Law’s chief executive, said: “I believe that law is set to be radically reshaped by the emergence of technology such as Peppermint CX, and this will present a real opportunity to both remove waste and duplication in back-office operations, and to change the way we deliver services and manage client relationships.”

Wild added that he was looking to challenge the status quo where legal services are delivered so expensively and with such complexity that they had become inaccessible for 80% to 90% of the population. “The way to address the issue is through disruptive innovation and investment in technology, like Peppermint, and this is set to transform the sector beyond recognition.”

Arlene Adams, Peppermint’s CEO, said: “This is a very exciting partnership. The leadership of Invicta Law have a vision to radically change the procurement and delivery of legal services in the public sector, and that has the potential to realise huge reductions in spend on these legal services. We are delighted to be working with them, and to be providing the core tech platform to support this business strategy.”
