There has been an increased focus recently on local authorities being encouraged to use compulsory purchase orders (CPOs) for a wide range of projects, from bringing single empty properties back into use to large-scale regeneration schemes. This course will break down the different stages of the CPO process, incorporating recent changes to the law and practice, and provide practical tips based on the speakers’ extensive experience. The course will include discussion of a number of real-life examples and will show delegates how a CPO is made by talking through a real case from start to successful conclusion. The speakers will also look at the issue of compensation and explain how the different elements can be calculated.

This course will cover the following:

  • An overview of what CPOs are and what projects they can facilitate, looking at the most commonly used powers.
  • The different elements of compensation and when compensation should be paid.
  • The process of making the order and confirming the order, working through the documentation that needs to be drafted and the notice periods for each stage.
  • How to deal with objections, including the written representations and public inquiry procedures.
  • How to implement the CPO and the different ways in which this can be achieved.
  • Practical tips on tricky areas.

Target Audience

This course is intended for anyone with an interest in CPOs, from absolute beginners to those with some experience. For beginners, the speakers will explain the issues simply and highlight areas that can be tricky. For more experienced practitioners, this is an excellent opportunity to hear how the recent changes in law and practice will affect you and your work.
