The Government has offered unprecedented levels of support to certain businesses in the form of relief from the payment of rates and direct grants. Even so, many businesses will necessarily be looking to reduce their business rates burden further, if possible.  This online seminar looks at what scope there is to secure reductions by using existing provisions in the legislation. It will help practitioners faced with questions about whether the coronavirus outbreak can be relied on to secure a reduction in the valuation of hereditaments and also whether the closure by order of certain classes of business premises may give rise to an exemption from empty rates.

Topics covered:

  • Whether, and in what circumstances, the coronavirus outbreak may give rise to a material change in circumstances?
  • What are the implications for 2021 list values?
  • Exemptions from empty rates - closure of premises by order
  • Effect on tribunal hearings and potential for these to continue during the outbreak

Richard Glover QC and Cain Ormondroyd are barristers specialising in all aspects of rating law.
