This half-day course will look at what it means to be an in-house lawyer in a local authority, whatever your legal specialism. We will explore what being an in-house lawyer means, who is your client and what differences flow from working for a politically led public body. We will discuss key relationships with the Monitoring Officer, elected members, client departments and working as part of multi-disciplinary teams. We will conclude with a discussion on practical approaches, skills and behaviours to be an effective lawyer in local government.
This session will be suitable for anyone working in a local authority as a practising lawyer, whatever your specialist area, whether this is child protection, planning, commercial or any other field. It will be particularly useful for colleagues who are new to local government.
