Mastering the so-called ‘softer skills’ sometimes falls to the bottom of the pile for busy local authority lawyers. It’s expected that lawyers have an excellent understanding of the law, as well as a good grasp of other ‘hard skills’ from compliance to finance, IT to practice management, and these skills are increasingly a given in the eyes of clients. But skills such as commercial awareness, people skills, communication and problem solving are equally as important and arguably skills that many clients value the most.

This course will deconstruct and simplify how these soft skills are the real differentiator when it comes to client service and how we can best learn and then effectively apply such skills day to day. The course will focus in particular on:

• Knowing your client
• Creative problem solving and solution-based thinking
• Positive negotiation
• Relationship building

This course is designed to be as interactive as possible, with breakout rooms and other discussion sessions scattered throughout the day, allowing delegates plenty of time to ask questions, share experience and learn from colleagues.
