Independent inquiry launched into serious whistleblowing allegations

Brighton & Hove City Council has called in a barrister to conduct an independent external inquiry into the council's in-house waste service Cityclean following allegations of sexual harassment, racism, discrimination based on disability, bullying and intimidation at the organisation.

Council leader Cllr Bella Sankey said the council had pursued an independent inquiry after a "significant number of council workers" came forward to disclose the allegations.

"We take such complaints extremely seriously and that's why we've asked Aileen McColgan, Kings Counsel [of 11KBW], to conduct an independent investigation into these allegations", she said.

"Every member of our valued staff team should be able to work in a safe, comfortable and non-discriminatory environment. Unacceptable behaviour in the workplace will not be tolerated."

The inquiry, which began last week (3 July), does not have an end date.

The council noted that care and support are being offered to Cityclean staff throughout the process, including a welfare line.

McColgan KC has been involved in litigation and investigations concerning alleged antisemitism and transphobia and has also advised organisations on the investigation and management of complaints of sexual harassment, assault and harassment, and bullying.
