Local Government Lawyer and Air Quality News launch new Clean Air Event

Local Government Lawyer and Air Quality News magazine have launched a new event aimed at helping local authorities to tackle the legal issues they face when trying to improve the air quality in their areas.

The conference, to be held in central London on 13th May, aims to provide those charged with the task of improving air quality – and their lawyers – with a legal roadmap to improve the air quality in their respective locations and meet the government’s timetable to ensure that air pollution is below legal limits.

The urgency follows ClientEarth’s series of court victories over the UK government’s failure to comply with the EU’s air quality standards. The government has left the bulk of the responsibility for compliance with local authorities.

While local authorities have a wide range of legal powers and other levers to implement anti-pollution measures, key gaps remain. Meanwhile, some solutions may have adverse unintended consequences if not carefully deployed.

Chaired by Stephen Cirell, a range of speakers, including representatives from ClientEarth, will address the key legal issues around air quality, including:

  • What powers are available to local authorities to clean up the air – including some you may not have thought of…
  • How to set up a clean air zone
  • ClientEarth on their ongoing strategy to force the UK to clean up its air
  • How to enforce the new ban on solid domestic fuel
  • What happens after Brexit?
