Political affiliation key to councils sticking with fixed-term tenancies
- Details
Some 29 out of 50 stock-owning councils surveyed by Inside Housing magazine have said they are in favour of retaining lifetime tenancies.
Sixteen meanwhile said they would take advantage of changes brought about by the Localism Act 2011 and offer flexible five-year tenancies.
According to the magazine, the survey results showed that councils’ approach to fixed-term tenancies correlated with their political leadership.
Out of the 29 to favour lifetime tenancies, 25 were Labour-led. Of the 16 offering five-year tenancies, 12 were Conservative-led.
Housing Minister Mark Prisk told Inside Housing: “Councils should be using the flexibilities we have given them to ensure homes go to those in greatest need in their area, better meet the needs of current and future tenants and cut waiting lists."
