HHJ Lucraft QC named as new Chief Coroner of England and Wales

His Honour Judge Mark Lucraft QC has been named as the new Chief Coroner of England and Wales, with the appointment taking effect from 1 October 2016.

Judge Lucraft will replace His Honour Judge Peter Thornton QC, who is retiring after four years in the role.

The appointment, made by the Lord Chief Justice after consultation with the Lord Chancellor, is for a three-year term.

Judge Lucraft, who is 54, was called to the Bar in 1984 and took silk in 2006. He was appointed as a Recorder in 2003 and as a Circuit Judge in 2012.

He is currently deployed to the Central Criminal Court where, in addition to his new work as Chief Coroner, he will continue to sit.
