Education regulator in Wales to appoint legal adviser to fitness to practice committees

The Education Workforce Council in Wales is to appoint a legal adviser to its fitness to practise committees, including associated regulatory advice.

The successful provider will also give general legal advice to the organisation, which is the independent regulator in Wales for teachers in maintained schools, Further Education teachers and learning support staff in both school and FE settings, as well as youth workers and people involved in work-based learning..

The contract will last 36 months with an option to extend for a further one year.

The EWC was established by the Education (Wales) Act 2014. Under the Act, the General Teaching Council for Wales (GTCW) was reconfigured and renamed to become the EWC. The new organisation came into being on 1st April 2015.

The EWC awarded a £1.7m contract in May 2018 to law firm Kingsley Napley to provide presenting officer services.
