Law Society issues practice note on use of cloud computing services

The Law Society has issued a practice note on the use of cloud computing for all solicitors, practice managers and IT staff using or planning to use such services.
The note covers:
- SRA Principles;
- What is cloud computing? Characteristics; types of cloud service; examples of cloud computing; deployment models; defining cloud computing from a regulatory perspective.
- What are the risks and benefits of cloud computing? Benefits; risks; analysing risks and benefits;
- Data protection and information security: your existing data protection practices; Information Commissioner’s guidance; distinguishing data controllers and data processors;
- Other professional conduct matters: confidentiality and outsourcing; access to outsourced data by the SRA; lawful access to data;
- Procurement and contract: pre-contract – internal approval; pre-contract – scope for negotiation; key commercial and legal issues; other contractual issues;
