London borough secures High Court injunction to block car-cruising

The London Borough of Croydon has become the latest local authority to secure a High Court injunction to prevent car-cruising.

Mrs Karen Steyn QC, sitting as a Deputy High Court judge, granted the injunction, which included a power of arrest, last week (30 September).

Croydon Council was seeking to tackle the so-called 'Croydon Cruise', where vehicles including motor cycles and quad bikes perform handbrake turns, 'doughnuts' and other stunts on an industrial estate. Up to 500 spectators attend the event. According to the council there have previously been three crashes including one fatality.

Kuljit Bhogal of Cornerstone Barristers advised the local authority on the evidence required, drafted the application documents and appeared on the council’s behalf in court.

The case was reported on Westlaw and Lawtel. The Westlaw case analysis can be found here.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council recently also secured a High Court injunction against unauthorised car cruise events and ‘unsanctioned meets’ for the next 12 months.

The council applied to the court after it discovered that a ‘Southend Takeover’ event was being planned. The event was being advertised on social media and it had been suggested that more than 800 people would attend.
