District council to become third party reporting centre for hate crime

North Hertfordshire District Council will become a third party reporting centre for hate crime at its customer service centre so that complainants need not go to a police station.

Staff concerned have been trained to provide support and offer a safe environment for victims of racism and xenophobia.

Tony Hunter, executive member for community engagement, said: "The council welcomes diversity and has always had a zero-tolerance approach to hate crime. The council has now launched itself as a third party reporting centre to provide a safe haven for victims and witnesses to a hate crime.”

He said hate crime was illegal and “no two individuals are the same – we need to embrace individuality and diversity”.
