Chief executive warns councillors over "unacceptable" emails which could pose “significant legal risks”: report

Durham County Council Chief Executive John Hewitt has warned councillors that "unacceptable" emails sent this month could pose "potentially significant legal risks" to the local authority, according to the BBC.
The BBC reported that Hewitt did not detail exactly what was said in the emails but said they involved presenting "personal views, allegations and assumptions" about council staff and other councillors as though they were fact.
In an email sent to councillors, the chief executive warned that all members had a responsibility to maintain "high standards of behaviour" and "to treat others with respect".
"The current situation is unacceptable and should not continue," he added.
According to the BBC, Hewitt said the emails had been sent via a councillor-wide distribution list.
Durham County Council declined to comment.
