Association of Electoral Administrators seeks clarification of impact of coronation of King Charles III on election timetable

The Association of Electoral Administrators has said it is in touch with the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities and the Electoral Commission over how the coronation of King Charles III will affect the timetable for elections next May.

It was announced this week that the coronation will take place on Saturday 6 May 2023.

The AEA said: “We know election teams with scheduled polls on 4 May 2023 will need to know how this may affect the election timetable.

“We do not know yet whether the May Day bank holiday will be moved to Friday 5 May, in the same way May Day 2020 was moved for the VE Day 75th anniversary.”

The AEA said there was also the potential issue of holding Friday election counts on what may now be a bank holiday, or even Coronation Day if parish council counts are planned for 6 May.

It added that it was also aware of the additional work election teams combined with democratic services teams, and Returning Officers, will be taking on to plan and run celebratory civic events.

“We are in touch with the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities and Electoral Commission and will keep our members updated as soon as we hear anything,” the AEA said.
